AMBIENCE
FOLLOW THE JOURNEY
We are now on the way to Berlin and keep our focus on the ambience and wellbeing inside the pod.
WELLBEING
"Well-being is often associated with physical experience. Eyes, sense of balance, smell, touch - there are six senses [you can work with]."
Expert, Conceptual Design Agency
"Well-being means security. There is actual and perceived security. So you have to ask yourself how you create trust [for example, through] shape, color, material, and screens."
Expert, Industrial Design Agency
"The question is how to cover the subject of well-being in general. Actively or passively. Maybe bypass the soundscape of everyday life and use the time in the hyperloop as a means of deceleration. To create an opposing trend here would be interesting."
Expert, Car Design
In order to develop a user-centered design, the well-being of passengers should be the first priority.
If the user does not feel comfortable, they will not accept the concept.
HEALTH RISK PREVENTION
How to deal with the human factor: claustrophobia & panic?
"The Hyperloop system is primarily aimed at the normal population.
Such an encapsulated tube makes even normal healthy people feel oppressive."
Expert, Psychologist
"This is a really extreme situation here. Just knowing that you are in a tube without windows, then in a tunnel where you can't see anything and with four people you don't know."
Expert, Pilot
"I find it terrible to feel that I have no connection to the outside world."
"A reassuring voice would help me there. I have often noticed this on trains, the moment a voice starts up I feel better."
An anxiety attack in the hyperloop is a worst case scenario,
and could lead to serious mental or physical health issues.
Avoid triggers to reduce the risk that normal people develop panic!
LIGHT / MATERIALS / COLOURS
How do optics and haptics play into the design?
"Perhaps the light will also adapt to the day [...] like outside. Then it is possible to follow what's happening outside, even though you can't see anything."
"I've heard that beige is calming."
"What is important is to have light that is pleasant. That's the only way to feel comfortable."
"In general, it is the case that blue is rather activating, red rather damping. In this case it would be sensible to choose something less activating. No bright red, rather keep it darker, more muted, tinted or slightly reddish."
Expert, Psychologist
Wood and warm lighting on the floor are calming and suggest safe and solid ground. The smooth synthetic walls capture and display the ambient light and shelter the user.
DISTANCE VIEW
How do you get a convincing view into the distance?
"If there are no windows here, I'd like a screen that shows what can be seen outside the tube."
"I always look for the brightness of the window. That helps a lot. It is reassuring to know what is out there."
"You could make the capsule 'transparent' so that you can see the outside world. [...] so you could concentrate on that and be distracted."
"Yes, I need to see something,
[I need] a fixed point."
"It would also be a possibility to work with projections [...]. This way you can simulate something for the user, his eyes, his hearing and his movement senses."
Expert, Conceptual Design Agency
"The more distracted you are by screens or light, the more open it feels and the less I think about it, the more the tension decreases."
Expert, Psychologist
A panoramic simulation of the outside sky opens the space and creates an airy feeling. The user can let their eyes wander between the ever-evolving details.
MOTION
How can a feeling of movement be transported?
"If I don't feel that the Hyperloop is standing, it wouldn't matter."
"It would be cool to visualize the speed with screens. I would also be interested in how fast you really are."
"Sudden stops stress me. Whenever you can't go any further and get stuck, it's bad. If it goes well, it's no problem."
"The thing must have an inner life with an illusion that you don't realize what's happening."
Expert, Pilot
The moving light strips and sky display motion on the near and far plane. This way, the user is informed about their speed without being overwhelmed by the actual numbers.
ACOUSTIC
"[Paired] with smell and sound, of course, that would be the high road."
"With this sound it is pleasant. [There's] just a certain acoustic distraction."
"[Unknown] sounds cause anxiety and claustrophobia.“
Expert, Psychologist
"I find the acoustics pleasant. There's a sense of privacy, which is nice."
